[print date: feb. 13-29, 1996] CMWC 1996 IN SAN FRANCISCO! Yes! The 4th annual Cycle Messenger World Championships will be held in San Francisco on Labor Day weekend this year. (8/30-9/2) After all the debate over whether the CMWC '96 would be in the Big Apple or the Hilly City by the Bay, the international committee (IFCMC) decided on our lovely city. The "head honchos" came to SF after visiting NYC to find out the who, what, where of the organization process in SF. After some international diplomacy to ease the ruffled feelings on both sides, SF and the "father of the CMWC" (Achim) met on that happy middle turf of understanding. Achim and his helper Daniel were shown around SF by bike. They cruised the proposed race course which includes part of Telegraph Hill. Both Achim and Daniel made it up, but Daniel was a little daunted by the grade of Kearny coming down so he opted for the stairs, while Achim fearlessly bombed onto Broadway. But, it was no tthe beautiful vistas and strong messenger community which sealed SF's fate. The Golden Gate Bridge must take credit for that. While riding across the Bridge, one of the pillars jumped out and attacked Achim; knocked him down, took a blood sacrifice from his head and totaled his borrowed bike's front wheel. He was o.k.; just a permanent reminder of SF's willpower and hospitality on his cranium. After lots of shop talk and beers at Cate's house he pledged his support and gave loads of good advice. MARKUS WESLEY COOKE 8/25/60 - 1/3/96 Markus worked to unite the SF messenger community so we could show the world what a community of messengers can be. Markus lived a full 35 years on planet earth. He left us about 2 months ago. His energy and heart is sorely missed. With his booming voice and enthusiasm he supplied the CMWC '96 organizational group with the energy and spirit to get through the preliminary effort of bringing the Cycle Messenger World Championships to San Francisco. We owe him a huge debt and know he will be supplying the CMWC '96 with spirit from wherever he is resting his bones. CMWC '96 : THE UPDATE Who is it? Megan Redington (LSD) - Pres.
