[print date: march 1-14 1996] A HELLUVA RACE: the Outlaw Alleycat Final Saturday night, 5:30, Sydney G. Walton Park (between Front and Davis in SF) - the weather was ominous - over 20 messengers took off to cover 25+ miles of San Francisco terrain in the Outlaw Alleycat Final. We had to hit 4 stops: (1) the very end of Municipal Pier, (2) the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park [to do a lap in honor of Erik Zo], (3) the very top of Twin Peaks, (4) the slide in South Park [where this rider lost her lock], then down to the Mission Rock Resort where cheering crowds (from as far away as LA), beer and music waited. The route of the masses was Muni Pier, Polo Fields, Twin Peaks, S. Park then on to the finish. 4 of us were mavericks. Punker Jon and I chose to get the hill over with 1st and headed straight for TP. I lost him on the climb and got to the top first to claim a goldfish [a little extra booty for the first at each stop - it upped you one place]. The daring Elizabeth Lee went to South Park first and claimed her fish. And Bruce went to have dinner with his Grandma in the Avenues and still finished before some. BOYS: 1st - Norm 2nd - Casey WALDO Williams 3rd - Grey 4th - Mike (from Lightning) WOMEN: 1st - Megan (11th overall thanks to a fish - sorry Mike) 2nd - Rebecca (14th over all) 3rd - Elizabeth and her fish The season will start again next year around Halloween - hope to see you out there!!!!! THE ODYSSEY OF THE FIRST REGISTRATION The CMWC '96 SF committee is proud to annouce we have received our first registration money! A few weeks ago Colin Slack from Toronto, Ontario (Canada) sent his money down to us via Alex (a former SF messenger who fell in love during the CMWC '95 Toronto and stayed). On his way back to San Francisco, Alex ran out of money and had to convert Colin's Canadian dollars to US bucks and spend it. But, being a responsible messenger, he logged in his memory to pay it back. With the help of beers at Zeitgeist his memory flew into action and he produced 40 US dollars (actually more than he was given Canadian) and paid for Colin Slack to race on Labor day. Thank you Alex and Colin! CMWC UPDATE: what's going on II. The CMWC '96 SF is doing business as a Not-For-Profit Organization thanks to tireless work of Cate Cusick with the advice of attorney Mark Romeo. The intentions of the CMWC as a NPO are to improve public awareness of the use of the bicycle as a viable means of transportation, indispensable to commerce and a great joyride. This will be accomplished through the public exhibit of the bicycle being used for the above reasons. (The public exhibit will come in the form of public rides and picnics - there is one planned for April and the big whammy event in August the CMWC). It is hoped that not only will the use of the bicycle in the urban environment be increased, but that the respect and awareness for cyclists will also increase leading to greater safety and cycling conditions. We also hope to inform the public about bike messengers and develop a sense of appreciation for the work they do. In acheiving this messengers hope to dispel the negative image that shrouds them in romantic visions of outlaw cyclists on par with the Hell's Angels. II. Sponsorship/media Drive: The drive to get sponsors and major media coverage is being conducted by local fund-raiser and messenger friend Ken Maley; aided by the amazing enthusiastic and energetic Linda Laski (the manager of CMWC faves Joy of Six). With their expertise and guidance the complete inexperience of the CMWCers in marketing and media relations will not be a handicap. III. Registration: Registration forms are available now. Joel Metz (he works for Pelican, rides a single speed blue Kona, has a huge Crass symbol on his Zo Bag) - well that guy is the registration guy. He has also designed a Web Site. Visit it. *Registration costs $40 American until May 1st. Then it goes up to $60. If you would like to participate in all the events but the main race it costs $20 - or you can pay as you go. I know it sucks to have to pay for anything - but without $ there is no event. The great and small King Courier of SF has pledged to match each of their riders entry fees. THANK YOU KING!!! IV.
