[print date: end of june] REGISTRATION: JOEL Things are looking up as far as registration goes. Joel is very enthusiastic about the rate registrations are coming in; "We're up to about 180 registrations, and we just got one in from Finland." About 300 registration forms and invititations were just printed up for a mass mailing to send all over the world. SPONSORSHIP: LINDA Bok Choy is putting together a "Messengers Guide to the City". This will be a very cool book about the special, not-so-well-known nooks and crannies of the city. Se he is looking for your suggestions as far as cool places to go, equally cool and cheap places to eat, good make out spots, good rock climbing places, best corner store, scenic and maybe unknown bike rides/trails, etc. Please call and leave a message (626-CMWC) or write in to CMWC attn: Bok Choy 1095 Market St #216 SF CA 94103. We also need sponsors for Bok's books, it's a good opportunity for local merchants to get in some inexpensive advertising. We've also caught the interest of such potential sponsors as: Nike's Guerilla Marketing division, Bay TV, Wild 107, Fox Network, Dave's Late Show KSAN, ESPN, KQED and Bike Magazine. Also our official, big, glossy sponsorship packets are being sent out and we think they will really give things a boost. PROPOSITION FOR HOST CITY '98 [by Howard Williams] It was the Monday after the CMWC '95 in Toronto when messengers and company representatives got together to discuss the locations of the next Championships. The decision for SF gave us only 8 months to prepare, and future cities should have more time to organize. Barcelona has already been chosen as the next site for CMWC '97. So I beleive that any cities wishing to host the CMWC '98 make a public declaration of intent at or before the 1996 event. A list of the candidate cities should be announced and/or published as the '96 CMWC. Or it would be even better to have the proposal (or something in writing) together at the championships so you could save some postage and present it to everyone while we are all together. In any case. each team should vote and send the results to a designated neutral city who will count the votes at least before January 1997. Racers should vote as individuals and not by team so each person can put in their opinion. On or before February 2, 1997, the vote will be officially announced, and the '98 host city will have about 19 months to prepare. The '96 selection process was somewhat undemocratic, and the decision gave us only aobut 8 months to prepare. We need a process that is more democratic and more timely. Any other ideas on choosing the '98 Champs host city are welcome and GO SF will print them. New York has applied to be the 1998 host city. If no other cities declare their intentions before Labor Day (September 2), I think the right thing to do would be for the Big Apple to be the 1998 host city. PRACTICE RACE: The practice race was a good learning experience for all of us. Even though we didn't use the official course, the subcourse still had a wicked hill and a good downhill. Five minutes before the start, about a zillion important questions we asked, which was expected, and although we weren't totally organized, the whole thing was a blast. I'm glad we did this because it helped me figure out how the points work, and how to develop a strategy for the real championships. The results: #1 Hermes, 2nd ME (Bob), 3rd Brendan Bradley (B), 4th and #1 woman Megan Redington, 5th Andy Strachan. Slim Buick ran away with all the style points, he raced his totally decked cruiser around the course three times. I saw him twice on the hill and that cat is determined. Thanks a lot to everyone who came. COUCH SURFING COORDINATOR NEEDED: We really need someone to help us shack up our friends from abroad. We are still working on Camp Courier, but some folks will prefer to stay with locals. We have a list of about 80 people who are willing to have people crash, we just need somebody to call everyone and get it organized. It involves getting this list, calling everybody, seeing about available houses and how long theyre available, then when everyone comes in and says "Where do we stay?" you will have a list of places for them to crash. There's a few burritos in it for you, call us at 626-CMWC. OUTREACH: THE BIKE RODEO IS ALMOST NIGH Call July 20th "Bike Culture Day" and mark it on your calendar. We're having a bike rodeo in McLaren Park for the childrem on our rad city, and YOU need to be there. The Rodeo will be from 11 to 5pm and we will have some food, drinks, and informative booths for the kids about riding techniques, bike history and safety info, etc. Then later in the afternoon we will have some BMX and fixed gear tick goin' on, we have some ramps and Slim Buick will be there too. The Lowrider Club also may show up and show off their chromed out fully trick rides. We're doing this in the spirit of the upcoming CMWC to reach out to the kids and show them how great biking is. So if you have kids or know some little rascals, bring em down because this will be a great opportunity for them to come and ride their bikes, learn more about them, and talk with messengers. After the rodeo we're haivng the first meeting of the Family of California Messengers (FOCeM). Messengers from all over California are coming together for a tacqueria burrito race that will go all over the city and end with a surprise concert. The details are a little hazy at this point, but I'll fill you in later. The film fest turned out great and there were some really cool movies. They were all raw, underground, 16mm type movies, and each one told its story in a different way. Some were documentary style and others were free of dialogue with just music. If you missed out, don't sweat it, cuz there'll be another one Labor Day Weekend. Hey Travis, thanks for having all of us over, you've got a sweet pad. CMWC HAS GREAT APPRECIATION FOR: Travis (for the film fest), Complete Security for donating a lock, Fast Forward for dubbing our promo video, KP Printing, Dogpaw, RRRRebecca, Lance, Bok Choy, Elizabeth, Kristan Sorge for you work on the video, everyone who helped and raced in the practice race, everyone who's called to volunteer, and to all my friends here and the CMWC for all your hard work (it's going to pay off) and to every messenger out there all over the world.
